In a large glass bowl combine the sugar, shortening and eggs.
Sift the dry ingredients together (flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and cinnamon).
Using a mixer, combine the pumpkin and flour mixture, alternating between dry and wet ingredients.
Mix the chocolate chips and nuts into the mixture with a spoon.
Drop by teaspoonful onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
