Cakes, Cookies & Candy
Crunch Bark Candyas given to MawMaw by Christine Simon
This candy was prepared for 70 co-workers. I was glad I was one of them. This candy is quick and easy to make. Where did anyone come up with the name “bark” to describe a holiday candy that comes in sheets made of chocolate or similar meltable confections with pieces of nut or hard candy embedded? Must be the thickness and irregular texture of the candy that would remind one of tree bark, maybe?

Sand Tarts - Pecan Sandies Ruby for Ms Inez Vincent
This cookie was served annually at my Alma Mater. A favorite for the high school homecoming teas. It grew to be one of our family favorites. We always had these at Christmas time as pecans were in season at that time.

Turtle CakeMary Ann Broussard Recipe Collection for Katie
• Turtles are such fun to watch and have fascinated for centuries. We all at some times have thought about retreating into a shell? But after baking this turtle cake, you will quickly find that you do not want to be there. Turtles are reptiles and have a hard shell that protects them like a shield, this upper shell is called a ‘carapace’; the lower shell is called a ‘plastron’. Turtles have existed for around 215 million years and are cold-blooded. Sea turtles have special glands which help remove salt from the water they drink. This dessert will warm your heart and the little ones to the idea of turtles.

Simple Pineapple CakeRuth Broussard's Recipe Box
General Mills and Pillsbury did not introduce their cake mixes until 1949. The most oft quoted date is 1929 usually mentioning Duncan Hines cake mixes which originally quite lumpy. Now as in other cultures, Cajuns are not too proud to pick up a cake mix at the local grocer. Pineapple is a favorite Cajun flavor and this recipe is the simplest and easiest of all to satisfy the hungry Cajun.

NUTRITION INFORMATION FOR FIGS - 1/4 cup dried figs counts as 1/2 cup in the MyPyramid.gov Fruit Group. For a 2,000- calorie diet, the daily recommendation is about 2 cups of fruit. Now this is odd... but, there are over 600 types of figs, and you can't find ANY of them in the produce section of the local grocery store...

Marion's Squash CakeMarion Turnage
Did you know that summer squash has a soft edible shell or skin and winter squash has a hard shell or skin? Did you know that squash comes in two different varieties ---summer and winter? Did you know that different varieties of squash can be interchanged in recipes because they have similar texture and flavor?

Chewy Walnut SquaresMarion Turnage from Mae 12-09-1979
This has nothing to do with walnuts but did you know that roosters cannot crow if they cannot fully extend their necks and it is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky. Also leave Santa's some bananas for Christmas. Why? Because reindeer like to eat bananas - oh this candy is really great for Holiday baking and sharing.
